TYSONS CORNER, Va., Aug 16 (Reuters) - Sprint Nextel Corp the No. 3 U.S. wireless service said on Thursday it would spend $2.5 billion by the end of 2008 to build a network based on WiMax, an emerging high-speed wireless technology.

Sprint had said it would invest about $2.8 billion this year and next year on a network based on WiMax, a technology it plans to use to blanket cities with wireless Web access on everything from cell phones and laptops to digital music players and cameras.

It also said it expects between $2 billion and $2.5 billion in revenue from WiMax in its fiscal year 2010.
